Is That a Word?

My blogger friend Astrid in the Netherlands has a funny post about her word for the right turn signal in a car which got me to thinking. My family calls both turn signals (whether right or left) blinkers. I've also heard them called clickers.

Does everyone call them blinkers or is that a Cajun thing? Also, does anyone use separate words for either the right turn signal or the left turn signal? I was just wondering.

Another item that seems to have a lot of different words for it is the baby pacifier. My family called it a fa-fa. I have no idea why. My baby sister called milk num as in yummy, I think. I had a cousin who called donuts toomies as in give it to me. My family also called spaghetti pasgetti for years.

When my son was about a year old, one of his first 'words' was gink, as in Give me a drink. Sometimes he would really draw it out if I wasn't paying attention to him, "Giiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnk."

Edited to add: A commenter wants to know what people call the remote control. I call it the remote control. I didn't realize people called it anything else.

We call turn signals blinkers here too and we called pacifiers pacies, nuks or binkies.

Looked like you had fun last night. You go girl.

"zqzqs"

zippity quick zippity quick STOP!

Laurie said...

Sophmom - I've heard binkie used a lot but we never used that one. Actually, Cory would never use a pacifier at all. (We did have some fun last night!)

Tom's long xylephone entertained many curious zenophobes.

Make that zookeepers (zenophobe is spelled xenophobe).

In the UK signals are indicators and in my part of the UK baby 'pacifiers' are dodos (pronounced doughdoughs) or dummies. :)

No, blinkers is also the word used by Oregonian cannibals.

(Nice new avatar you got, Laurie. Is that a marijane ciggie you're holding?)

Laurie said...

Miladysa - Dodos! I like it. In Cajun French, we ask the babies if they want to go dodo meaning do they want to go to sleep. I wonder if the two meanings are related.

Popeye - Sounds like you need a trip to Cajun country.

Old Horsetail - The reefer is hidden inside the Happy New Year horn. (Don't tell anybody.)

I am in New Zealand , we call them indicators the same as the UK.

I call 'em turn signals. They are turn signal indicators though I guess.

How about names for the remote control for the TV, we call it 'the box'.

crtjm

can't remove the jelly marmalade.

Laurie said...

Wendy Wings - I guess that makes sense. Don't you guys drive on the left side of the road also?

Anonymous - I never knew people called a remote controller anything other than a remote control. I added that to the post. Let's see if we get anything.

*flljl* - Five lovely ladies just left.

Ok, Kara called hers something more like "fifi" instead of fafa. Cory also called her Bean before she was born.

I have another question totally off subject but relating to the picture you used...were did you get it? I won't go into detail about what Maria and I think of it. But just curious.

very quietly, quick freakin' dumbass.

OH yeah, we have several remotes so we usually just say where's the damn thing that does the sound, the DVD, or the satellite.

Indicators! Because they indicate!
Or whatchamacallits when you don't have enough time to think...

My sister calls the remote control a "boobah" (she actually calls many electronic devices "boobah" but I'm pretty sure it all started with the remote).

"zwpar"

Zip with precious ample reserve.

Blinkers-"turn-signal", alt=right/left

Pacifier-"passy", but I hear "nook" alot.

Remote control-"remote", although everyone else down here calls it a "flicker" which totally annoys me.

*ersegv* everyone regurgitates sometimes, even government valets.

(Tom's long xylephone...HAHAHA!!!)

Zina - I usually get my pictures by doing a Google search. In this case, I just typed pacifier into Google.

Edouard - When I don't have time to think...or when your brain just can't find the word you're looking for. That's happening to me more and more these days.

Sophmom - Boobah! I like it.

Tanda - I've heard passy before but not flicker. My ex-in-laws from Mississippi had all kinds of names for things I had never heard of.

I'm from CA and I have always called them blinkers, both right and left. I want to hear what people call them when they call the right one word and the left another. I call my remote control a remote, but have heard it called "clicker".

Laurie said...

dd - Clickers and blinkers seem to be the norm.

I call mine a remote, but my family and I went to see my boss and her family for Christmas dinner last night (we all work very long hours during the holidays, tommorow will be my first full day off since about the 19th) and they called it the TV Gun. Weird. I figured it was some yankee thing by way of Miami.

Laurie said...

Richard - TV gun! That's a good one.

Mik - I knew about the nappies thing but not about the dummies. I'm learning a lot.

I call my turn signal a "blinker" and the remote control the "remote". The word control is of no use to me since I am out of it.

We always called pacifiers "pacies" or "binkies", and recently I heard Brian's mom call it a "noogie". I always thought a noogie was rubbing someone's head in an uncomfortable way with your knuckles.

So this is how some fellow named Tim winded up on my Blog! Haha .. Thanks, Laurie. Umz, to be honest, the right turn signal does go under the same name as the left turn signal in Dutch. The conversation I had with my uncle, however, referred to the right turn signal. I could give you the word for it in Dutch, but I am sure, it wouldn't ring a bell for you!!! Haha ... So I will just ring my doorbell. Ring, ring ... Yes, please, do come in after wiping your feet.

Laurie said...

Jen - Noogie is a new one to me.

Astrid - Girl, you crack me up! (There's some more slang for you.)

Pacifier, blinker, and remote here in Michigan.

another one you can add to the list is remote controls for your television. no end in sight for words used to describe this including, clicker, remote, channel changer...

Laurie said...

Danno and Amanda - Thanks for the info.

Turn Signals are "blinkers" however drivers here in Houston don't use them ... but that's another topic all together!
Pacifiers were "pacies";
Remote Controls are "clickers"

Astrid said...

Oh, and remote control = AFSTANDSBEDIENING. Now you got a pronunciation-challengde for the day!

Laurie said...

Shelli - My dad calls the remote a clicker and we don't know why. The rest of us say remote.

Astrid - Oh, my! I'll see if my German fried at work can say that.

I think this is just in my husbands family, but they call the remote control "the egg"

I don't know why!?

(Long time reader, first time commenter)

Oh wow, quit giggling loudly pretty lady!

Laurie said...

Zinfandelo - Hello! I've never heard of it being called an egg. I'll have to do another post like this. It's been interesting.

Donna said...

In California, we call 'em blinkers... and the remote is the clicker.

Laurie said...

Donna - Sounds like clicker is the word for lots of people.
