Who doesn't like to waste time? I know I do. I decided to check out "The Smoking Gun" website tonight, which is always a good way to waste some time.
I haven't looked at "The Smoking Gun" in a long time and, much to my surprise, there's a whole page just for wasting time. Check it out (click here) and see if you can match mug shots with their crime or their t-shirt or what they stole or...the list goes on.
I'm not very good at it, but I sure did waste some time.

Aunts and Uncles of Walmart
Sunday afternoon (after the roast beast and before the joy ride to Port Arthur) I introduced my aunts and uncle to the People of Walmart.com. My mom had received some of the Walmartians by e-mail and had shown the e-mail to them the night before.
I said, "You ain't seen nothin', yet. There's a whole website full of those folks."
This particular set of relatives (Aunt Gladys - 63, Aunt Hazel - 65, Mom - 75, Aunt Bernice - 77 and Uncle Henry - 80) are ultra-hip for their respective ages due to the fact that their children (my siblings and cousins) are uber-cool.
We try to keep them up on the latest trends. We give them e-mail accounts. We get them addicted to Facebook. For all their worldly pop-culture coolness, however, they weren't prepared for the glory that is the People of Walmart.
"Oh, my God!"
"What the hell?!"
"Doesn't she have a mirror? Who let her leave the house like that?"
"His ass is sticking out. His entire ass!"
"I'd like to pour spackle into his crack. Idiot." (That was Uncle Henry.)
"Can't she feel the breeze? She has to feel the...she's not wearing underwear! AAGGHHH!!!"
"Good lord!"
"Is that a man or a woman?"
"It's a woman. Look at her boobs. Are those boobs? I don't know anymore. I think they're boobs."
My uber-cool work for the day? Done.

Live Texas Music Map
Click here to view a map of Texas musician/singer/songwriters concert dates. The map is searchable by date, artist and/or venue. The picture below shows concerts for Ray Wylie Hubbard between now and next June. Very cool.

Best Halloween Costume Ever?
I just read this on My Life is Average while surfing Stumble Upon:
"I grew up in a college town, and one Halloween our doorbell rang and we opened the door expecting to see trickortreater—but what was in front of our open door—was another door! Like, a full-on wooden door, that had a sign that said “Please knock.” So we did, and the door swung open to reveal a bunch of college dudes dressed as really old grandmothers, curlers in their hair, etc, who proceeded to coo over our “costumes” and tell us we were “such cute trick or treaters!” One even pinched my cheek. Then THEY gave US candy, closed their door, picked it up and walked to the next house."

This and That
Cool New Beaumont Events Website
Click here for a great new website for Beaumont events. It's called CtheDs.com.
Connect the Dots
The name of the above website (CtheDs) stands for "connect the dots," which reminded me of how much I used to love doing "connect the dots" or "dot-to-dot" puzzles when I was a kid.
Can Catchers and Channel Changers
Thinking about "dot-to-dot" puzzles reminded me of a conversation I had with someone a couple of days ago. When we were kids, my brother, sisters and I used to fight for the "privilege" of being the can-catcher or the channel-changer.
What was a can-catcher you ask? A can-catcher was the person who would grab the cans in the grocery store as directed by mom and/or dad. Tough work, but somebody had to do it. I suspect this little job duty was created during one of mom's four pregnancies. Plus, having four children with an age range of only six years, mom had to come up with creative ways to keep us (well, Terry and Stuart) from running amuck in the store.
What was a channel-changer? In the olden days, there were no remote control devices for television sets or for anything else, for that matter. Every night, we took turns being the channel-changer. Mom or dad would tell us to either change the channel or raise or lower the volume or bang the side of the set when the picture got fuzzy. There were also the occasional vertical hold or "turn the big knob" issues to be dealt with.
Our parents also somehow convinced us that folding towels, dusting the furniture, washing the car or gathering coat hangers were fun activities. They constantly used the old Tom Sawyer trick on us and we never knew. Sneaky!

Dad Update and a Disease Map Just for You
Dad Update
Dad's still doing good and one of his nurses is helping him exercise more and had some good suggestions for mom for exercising him between the physical therapy visits. We're still not sure when mom and dad get to go home, because they want him to be strong enough for us to handle him and want to be sure he's still healthy after the infection he had and the round of chemo he just finished.
A Disease Map Just for You
Click here for a map guaranteed to make you lose sleep. It's the delightful "Global Disease Map." If I can't sleep, nobody sleeps.

Dad Update and a Regular Old Blog Post
Dad Update
Dad's home (since Thursday) and getting a little stronger every day. The home health nurse showed up yesterday and turned out to be a very good TJ Alumni friend. We were all in our Sunday "best" (glasses, hair pulled back, little or no makeup), so we didn't recognize each other until I read her name tag and told her who we (me, Terry, Bonnie) were. She did a wonderful job. Thanks, Robyn. It was great seeing a friendly, familiar face. (That's not to say that every doctor and nurse at the hospitals and working for the home health services haven't been wonderful, because they have.)
Regular Old Blog Post
When I was a little girl, the first thing I would do when I went to grandma's house (after the hugs and kisses, of course) was look for her newest Lillian Vernon or Harriet Carter or Miles Kimball catalog.
I would look at those books for hours. I'm still not sure why. It wasn't because I wanted any of that stuff. I guess I was just amazed by the amount and variety of stuff there was out there in the world. To this day, I still look at those catalogues. I don't think I've ever actually bought anything, but I love looking at them.
Of course, now a person can order from these places online. Maybe I'll do a little shopping. I really want one of those windshield cleaning thingys.

Sleep Talking
Since my dad's been sick, my mom's been concerned with his talking in his sleep. Being the internet family we are, we all Googled "sleep talking."
My sister Terry wins the prize for the best site I've come across in years. Click the link and be amazed at people's actual nocturnal wanderings...or wonderings, I supposed.

Want to See Something Scary Cool?
A few years ago, Google added "Street View" to its Google Maps. At the time, it was mostly limited to large metropolitan areas. Not anymore.
1. Go to Google
2. Click on the maps tab
3. Type an address into the search bar
4. Click on the little man (where the red arrow is pointing to the red circle) and drag him onto the map.

You might have to play around with it a bit to get used to it, but it's very cool. I "drove" all over Port Arthur last night.
The scary part? I typed in my parents' address and not only did their house pop up, but my dad's name popped up also. I assume this will happen for anyone who is listed in the telephone book, but still. Weird.

Ning!
I do realize that I keep going on and on about this high school alumni site I joined, but this post isn't about that site specifically. This post is about the fact that you can create your very own social network.
Go to www.ning.com and check it out. Family reunion? Friends from previous jobs? Cousins you want to keep up with? Start your very own MySpace-type network. Everyone can upload pictures and groups and discussions can be formed on specific areas of interest.
I haven't created my own network, so I'm not sure how simple it is to do that. However, based on the ease of use as a member of a Ning network I'm pretty sure it's a snap to set up your own space.
