What did you teach your children today?

My sister took her 15 year old daughter to the store because my niece wanted to cook cupcakes for dessert for Thanksgiving dinner. As my niece walked up and down the aisle, my sister asked her what she was looking for. For example, was she looking for chocolate or white cake mix? Was she looking for a certain frosting?

My niece said, "I'm looking for the cupcake mix."

I'll let you ponder that for a minute.

My sister said, "Katie, there is no such thing as cupcake mix. You just use regular cake mix but you cook it in a cupcake pan."

As my sister retold the story, I looked at her and said, "That's your fault."

She said, "That ain't nothin'. When I got home, I asked Elliott what he would buy if he wanted to cook cupcakes." (Elliott is my 21 year old nephew.)

"I don't know," answered Elliott. "I guess I'd buy milk and eggs."

"Okay, okay, that's right, " said Terry, "But, what kind of cake mix would you buy?"

Elliott said, "Cupcake mix, I guess."

I looked at Terry again and said, "Oh, yeah. This is definitely your fault."

Terry's husband said, "I told them the cupcake mix is on the same aisle as the toast."

Ha! Making cupcakes out of just plain cake mix--you had me going there. Good one!

You had me going there for a moment with Elliot's response, I expected him to continue "because we already have the flour, sugar, butter and baking powder!!!"

But if there is brownie mix...

Tim - Threw you a curve, huh?

Susan - Elliott isn't real handy in the kitchen, although I was impressed that he knew he'd need milk and eggs.

Abby - I agree it's a logical deduction. It's just that their momma didn't teach 'em no better.

Reminds me of the time my wife since me to the store for some dried plums. I saw lots of prunes but damn if I could find any dried plums...

I can't be sure that I'd know you needed regular cake mix if it were me.

Giggle. Chortle. Thigh-slap....

Ed - Hmmm...I have to put part of the blame on your wife for that one. You're only a man, after all.

Jen - Well, pretty girls don't have to be able to cook.

Dawn - You said it.

Old Horsetail - Don't hurt yourself now.

They sell mixes for all of that stuff?? I can't believe how much time I've been wasting! Do you realize how much TV I've missed doing all of this cooking??!!

Point well made Laurie Kay. Our society has a shortcut to bypass every task. I saw a commercial about an hour ago for pre-mashed potatoes by Bob Evans...wow. We've selected chemical laden, prepared foods in exchange for a very short investment of our time. It's sad. We're not talkin' Pate de Foie Gras here folks, they're Mashed Potatoes!!!! Cook' em, MASH 'em, salt & pepper, butter and milk. 15-20 minutes, TOPS.

When I have kids I hope I will be a good Dad, I know it's hard; but at the very least, I hope they will be able to cook themselves a meal.

...not that I'm knockin' box mixes! My wife makes the Ghiradelli Brownie mix. The brownies are so good that you almost have to kill yourself after you eat them, because no other brownie can ever compare.

(I hope no one takes that statement seriously, but if they did, at least they had a really good brownie before they died.)

Danno - I'm sure you'll be a great dad and that your kids will mash a mean potato.

Lauire, I'm with you...its definitely Terry's fault!

LOL. It good to know the younger cousins are just as funny as the old fart cousins.

Zina - Terry's kids are hilariious! But, then all the younger cousins are...Susan's, David's, Stuart's, mine and all the rest. They actually had no choice in the matter. ;)

Danno - Amen on that! Based on past breakfasts at other people's houses, it seems like the majority of the population think pancakes come from a yellow Bisquick box! Disgusting!

Ed - Wouldn't you just love to be a guest at Danno's house?
