Add Flavor to Taste?!

"...and that's how we added flavor to taste."

What the hell does that mean? Even though Healthy Choice has made another commercial explaining their methods for adding flavor in healthier ways than just adding salt, the phrase still makes no sense to me. Isn't "flavor" and "taste" the same thing?

Isn't adding "flavor" to "taste" like adding "scent" to "smell?" I'm telling you. It makes no sense.

While I'm on the subject of commercials, on the Dodge truck commercials they talk about "class-exclusive" this and "class-exclusive" that. What is "class-exclusive?"

Speaking of truck commercials, I don't know about the rest of the country, but, here in Texas, trucks are constantly being advertised. However, they use the same music on those truck commercials for years. That music, along with the general tone of the whole commercial, leads you to believe a person is un-American or un-Texan if they don't own a truck...a BIG truck.

Maybe those truck commercials just need to add some "touch" to "feel."

Lately I've been struck by Pepsi's odd choice of music for one or more of its new commercials. It's an obscure little piece I remember from my DJ days in the 80s. The tune goes with a song called "Jet Boy Jet Girl," and the lyrics are a not the sort of thing Corporate America generally likes to have associated with its products. I don't know for sure whose version it was, but it's the same arrangement, minus the words, that came out on a Razormaid DJ remix. You can read the lyrics here:

You can listen to a snippet of the song here:

It's not quite the same as the Razormaid remix, but I think it's the same "artist." And it's enough to know what commercial I'm talking about.

On second thought, I think it was on a "Prime Cuts" album rather than "Razormaid."

Laurie, sort of (but not quite) like putting the "ug" in "ugly?"

Jack, that's hilarious!

Jack - I miss the 80's.
(I don't think I heard that song in any of the country bars I was hanging out in at the time. Wonder why.)

Leslie - :P

To flavor could also mean to enhance. For example, you could "flavor" an ordinary jar of Ragu with bay leaves and other spices to make it taste more homemade. You wouldn't "taste" that same jar to enhance it.

There's a guy who does a Toyota commercial here in Orlando. He's been doing it for years. When I went to Houston, there he was, peddling some car dealer out there.

I hate truck commercials. I especially hate truck commercials in which Toby Keith "sings." He needs to add some "mouth" to "the business end of a 45." He irritates me.

Dave - I agree that "flavor" can be used as a verb but in this stupid commercial, I think they're using it as a noun. In my book, that makes "flavor" and "taste" the same thing. If they said, "We're adding flavor to the taste of our dinners with wine and herbs rather than salt," I wouldn't be so confused.

Jen - Hahahah! He irritates me, too. Now that you mention it, I think I hate all truck commercials, too, especially the ones where they use a fake manly Texan accent. Oh, yeah. That'll make me run right out and buy one. I can't stand that Whataburger announcer either.

I'll have a shot at seperating flavour and taste. You know those aero chocolate bars, the ones with all the little bubbles in them, if you eat one and then a plain chocolate bar, the flavour is the same but they taste different. I think taste includes not only flavour, but the texture of food as well.

I miss the 80's too.

My comment to this post inspired me to do my own blog post on the aforementioned Pepsi commercial, including such videos as I could find. Click on my name and it'll take you there.

Neil - Hmmmm...not sure I agree with that. I guess I hate that commercial so much I can't see anybody else's point of view on this thing. :)

Jack - I just came upstairs to check out all the links since I don't have speakers at work and couldn't check it out until now. Thanks!

I didn't get that phrase either at first, then I thought about the sentence construction. It's the same as saying "add salt to taste," meaning to add as much as you think tastes good. The use of the word "flavor" is what makes it confusing. They should have said "seasoning."

Just found your blog, keep up the good work. :)

Like putting the bitch in moan...um, well nevermind.

I was just wondering the other day how much John Mellencamp was paid for them to use his song on those damn commercials. Over and over again.

Phlip - Welcome to the party!

Grimm - I don't know why it's the music on the truck commercials that drives me crazy, but they do.
