Things you should know about karaoke

  1. You can't tell by looking at a person or talking to a person or working with a person for years whether or not they can sing

  2. Every singer is a wonderful little surprise just waiting to happen

  3. Karaoke makes people do wonderful things like inspiring my shy, 40-ish year old friend to get up and walk across the room to congratulate a 20-ish year old singer on a touching performance of Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends"

  4. It's an incredible way to re-discover or finally learn the beautiful lyrics of the songs which have been the soundtrack of your life

  5. It's one of the best ways I know to meet new people and have a great time with total strangers

  6. Only in New Orleans does karaoke start at 4:00 p.m....dammit

  7. I swear by The Power of Grayskull that I will one day have my very own Karaoke Palace: kids during the day, adults at night

  8. You're all invited to the grand opening

i haven't sung at any karaoke thing..
but..

i really dislike the "popular" songs here in mexico.. so that's one of the reasons i don't sing, another reason is of course, that i cant sing..

hehe.. but i would much rather sing green day songs than some sucky "cumbia" songs...

i don't know if you know what "cumbia" is, but i hate it, and the worst of it all is, that it's the most popular kind of music around... makes me gag.

Jen - You and Brian get the All Access Forever and Ever VIP Pass.

Leon - I can't sing either, but if the place is very crowded and it's really late, sometimes I'll give it a go.

I checked You Tube for "cumbia" and it sounds a lot like the traditional Mexican music we hear a lot in Texas. I prefer Green Day, too. :)

I would so be at your grand opening. And I would sing my heart out for ya.

Cumbia's a Mexican one-step, comparable to a Cajun or Texas two-step, so simple even I can't do it. I've seen it done as a line dance that circles the floor, and just like the two-step, there's always at least one older, Hispanic Fred and Ginger that make you want to go back and dance with the toddlers.

Ran into a woman a couple of years ago in Red River, New Mexico, who was planning a movie-oke night for her converted theater-tea-room-antique mall. I've been practicing my John Wayne moves for the next trip.

And if jen t. (soon to be e.) is invited to your grand opening, I'd better get an invitation, too.

Leslie - You guys get the Forever VIP pass, too!!

George - Some of the You Tube videos of people...um...doing the Cumbia...(?)...I saw were amazing.

And, yes, Georgie Boy, you and your whole lovely family get the VIP pass, too. Luckily, I don't have more than about 10 loyal blogging friends. So, you guys won't break the bank.

PLUS: Bad Karaoke, as done by Cameron Diaz, is so cute it's appalling.

Lorna - Cameron Diaz sounds like Celine Dion compared to me.

I first saw karaoke in Hiroshima, Japan in 1984. I'll never forget the raucus applause of those drunk, Japanese businessmen after I sang the Elvis versions of "Love Me Tender" and "My Way." Count me in on your grand opening.
