Friday Night!

I've been in a couple of blog/e-mail conversations the last few days with folks who share the same confusion as I do wondering why more people in this area don't get out and watch live music. I've lived here my whole life and this has always been a very music oriented culture.

However, most of the people around here only see live music at Mardi Gras or some sort of seafood oriented outdoor festival. I've narrowed the problem down to lack of advertising on the part of the venues and lack of a network of friends dragging each other off of their couches. When people get well past college/high school age, they just don't have that "What's going on this weekend?" network anymore.

Well, here's something for you to do this Friday night. My friend is in two bands and both bands are playing at Changing Times.

I wonder if I served pork-ka-bobs and shrimp-on-a-stick if I'd draw a crowd.

I'm gonna try to make this one. I haven't seen Dick play for a while. And for a nice warm up on Thursday night, Courville's is hosting the Gougers. Dinner and a show for twenty bucks. Boy, I hope I can pull off two late nights in a row. Maybe the shrimp-on-a-stick would help with that.

Good to know - I love live music! And Changing Times is a great venue.

But you're right, bad promotion from the clubs and bands. I used to work for one of the radio groups here and still had a tough time finding info about bands.

Here's the other problem, my daughter is 4, she loves live bands too. She even has ear mufflers to wear to concerts. But most folks look at me funny when I bring my 4 year old out to a club or even Crockett Street at 10 PM. And babysitters are wanting up to 10 bucks an hour.

So we just look forward to the festivals where we can all go and listen to live music while gnawing some sort of meat on a stick.

Steve - I guess I better start cleaning some shrimp.

Teresa - I love the idea of starting kids out early with live music and I don't just mean the music directed at children. That truly is a wonderful thing about having so many food festivals around here. It exposes kids to live music early and often...if their parents will bring them, that is.

Brent - And thank you for posting about it, too.

Just - Now, I bet that would seal the deal!
