This scenario freaks me out at least once a week...

UPDATE 12/20/08 - My niece Katie was the victim of this same scenario a couple of days ago (after I did this post). In the diagram, she would be the yellow car. She's fine. Just a little sore. People, I know you're being nice when you try to let people DRIVE ACROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC...BLINDLY...but you're not doing anybody any favors. Please, don't do it.

Caffeine...too little...too late

This morning, I accidentally put my lip-plumper-upper cream under my eyes and my anti-puffy-eye cream on my lips. So, I had plump eyes and skinny lips. Not the look I was going for.

Mmmmmmmmm...Giant Calamari

This giant squid is out in the Gulf of Mexico. How would you like to see that washed up in your yard after the next hurricane? I better start stocking up on marinara sauce, just in case.

Click here for the whole story and to see a creepy video of the giant squid.

Cla-WHAT?

If anybody has the cojones to try one of these, let me know. I can't do it. I just can't.

Seven Random Things

I've been tagged by Just a Plane Ride Away to tell you seven random things about myself. After you read mine, go write your own.

1. When my daughter-in-law was pregnant with the magical person we now all know as the Grand-Fabulous-Ava, I suddenly started liking all things girly and glittery and pink. I was never like that before. The odd thing was, we didn't know she was a girl until she made her grand entrance into our lives.

2. I would rather blog than read books, which has really put a dent in my book count over the last few years.

3. I love resale shops, but I hate flea markets and garage sales.

4. I'd rather spend money on food, friends and fun than on clothes.

5. I didn't like tomatoes until I was in my 20's and didn't eat broccoli until I was pregnant (25 years old). I drank my first whole beer about two years ago.

6. My first job was in the basket room at the neighborhood swimming pool. I still love the smell of chlorine.

7. When I was 19, I wanted to be a legal secretary, but I wouldn't quit the job at the doctor's office where I worked. Ten years later, I got a divorce and a paralegal degree and finally went to work in a law office and I still love it to this day...twenty-two years later.

Fifty-Three Candles

Sixteen Candles is one of those movies I never get tired of. If I'm scrolling through the channel guide and see it's playing, chances are I'm going to tune in for at least a little while. Of course, "a little while" inevitably turns into finishing the movie, so I've probably seen this movie in whole or in part about a hundred times over the last twenty-five years.

In 1984, when Sixteen Candles first came out, I had only been out of high school for ten years and my son was 4 years old. So, I identified more with Samantha than her parents. Twelve years later, when Cory was sixteen, I noticed a change in my perspective. I was suddenly more sympathetic to the parents than I was to the "kids" in the movie.

Now, with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the movie approaching, God help me I'm beginning to understand and appreciate the beauty of being the clueless grandparents. Just tell me where to go and when to be there and I'll do my best to try not to embarrass anybody.

Of course, anybody who's a regular reader of this blog knows it's not looking good for my kids and grandkids.

Another Slideshow?

Yes, another slideshow mostly featuring the
Grand-Fabulous-Ava.

"I love Nan's cornbread dressing!"

"My mom's a good colorer."

"Grandma Honey loved crackers, too?"

"Come on, Willie. I smell pie."

"Welcome to my home."

Sock Monkey...Anyone?...Anyone?

Are you looking for a top-quality, hand-made sock monkey for that perfect gift for that perfect sock monkey loving person? Then, you should buy one (or four) from my blogger friend Leslie (in the interest of family harmony, here's a link to her husband Grimm's blog, too) and her three generation team of sock monkey makers. Click here for the sock monkey store.*

Here's a short documentary on the sock monkey making process. I'm completing my Academy Award ballot as we speak.

* Don't buy me a sock monkey. They freak me out.
