Benefit for My Cousins

My cousins Alan and David (they're brothers) have both been recently diagnosed with cancer. David's son and some former classmates are putting on a benefit for them this Sunday. They were both big skateboarders and surfers back in the day, so it's really cool that the organizers have even put together a skateboard contest.

Thanks to everyone who has helped with this and I look forward to seeing everyone there. Details below...

Want to See Something Scary Cool?

A few years ago, Google added "Street View" to its Google Maps. At the time, it was mostly limited to large metropolitan areas. Not anymore.

1. Go to Google
2. Click on the maps tab
3. Type an address into the search bar
4. Click on the little man (where the red arrow is pointing to the red circle) and drag him onto the map.

You might have to play around with it a bit to get used to it, but it's very cool. I "drove" all over Port Arthur last night.

The scary part? I typed in my parents' address and not only did their house pop up, but my dad's name popped up also. I assume this will happen for anyone who is listed in the telephone book, but still. Weird.

Giant Squid Kisses and Octopus Hugs

This past Saturday night was our monthly all-alumni high school gathering which I began insisting people attend about three months ago and which has become a rousing success. If you're fortunate enough to have friends you've known for over 30 years (and in some cases, your whole life), you know that the standards for acceptable behavior are very low when you're all together, especially if alcohol is involved.

Saturday I was standing around minding my own business, when I was waved over to a group of people to have my picture taken. Looking back, I remember them having unusually big grins on their faces, but I just thought they were really, really happy to have me join them in a picture. Did I mention I was drinking?

When I got to the group, they said, "Stand by, Jay." I stood by Jay, posed for the picture with my lovliest smile and Jay kissed me on the cheek. I started to walk away and he said, "Let's take another one. You're supposed to kiss me." The request for a second picture should have tipped me off to a possible setup, especially since the grins of the people behind the photographer (*) were growing even larger, but it didn't. Did I mention I was drinking? I did?

I posed once again with my lovliest smile and was kissed again my Jay...with an overwhelming amount of tongue and wetness. Everybody laughed their asses off. It was, as I had not suspected, a setup. I did mention I had been drinking, right?

I did my best to keep my lovely smile on my face and not freak out like Lucy when Snoopy would kiss her. For hours after the smooch sneak attack, I visualized Jay's tongue as something akin to the giant squid I had recently seen on the National Geographic Channel.

I walked back over to my friend, Brent, and said, "I just got French kissed by Jay. It was very wet. They took a picture. Now, I'm going to have to pay Luke for that picture. I need to wipe my face. They took a picture. There's a picture."

"Don't worry," Brent said. "The picture will only cost you about two bucks."

"Yeah." I said.

"Of course, the negative is probably going to cost about fifty."

(*) The photographer is our classmate Luke who takes pictures at clubs and sells them back to us. Clever bastard.

Let's Save Some Money

You know how when you're checking out your merchandise and the cashier asks you, "Do you have a [fill in the blank] card?" your first reaction is, "Just check out my groceries and let me get the hell out of here."?

Next time they ask you that question at a Hallmark store, CVS or Kroger, think twice before saying no. You can actually save money with these cards.

I occasionally get coupons in the mail from Hallmark for anywhere from $5 to $10 off my next purchase as well as all kinds of other special offers. If you have a CVS card, be sure to watch your receipts. Your "Extra Care Dollars" are at the bottom of your receipt and you will sometimes get them through e-mail. With your Kroger card, you not only save money on groceries, you can also save money on gas.

These are the only three cards I use regularly. If you have others you like, let us know in the comments.

Huh? What? Huh?

LAST WEEK...

Carly: I'm $2 short to get free shipping on my Amazon.com order. Do you want to order something?

Laurie: Sure. Let me check my "shopping cart." (Note: My Amazon.com "shopping cart" has so much stuff in it that I have nightmares that Amazon will accidentally order all that stuff and I'll have to get a second job to pay for it all.)

Laurie: I'll order "Paranormal Uncensored." It's written by that guy I took a ghost hunting class from in Lafayette.

Carly: You owe me $17.00

Laurie: Weird! I have exactly $17.00 in my wallet. It's a sign.

FIVE DAYS LATER:

Carly (handing me my book): Here you go.

Laurie: What's that? Hey, that book's written by the guy I took that ghost hunting class from.

Carly (looking at me with a strange look on her face): Uh...you ordered it...Amazon...free shipping...

Laurie: Oh, yeah. HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!! How much do I owe you?

Carly: Uh...you paid me...$17...exact change...you made a big deal about the fact that you had the exact change.

Laurie: Hahahahaha!!!!! Right, right, right. Thanks.

Carly looked at me again with a puzzled, worried look on her face then quietly walked away.

Did I mention that Carly's only 27-ish? When she's 53-ish she'll understand.

What will we drink?!

Our office doesn't have water coolers, but we are furnished free bottled water. The refrigerator has a filter on it and so does the sink. My water pitcher at home also has a filter.

Occasionally, we run out of bottled water at work which was a temporary cause for alarm recently. I say temporary, because as Carly and I were wondering what we were going to drink since we were out of bottled water, we remembered that the sink had a water filter.

Then, we started talking about how spoiled we've become water-wise. We pondered how much salty, possibly polluted beach water and urine tainted swimming pool water we've swallowed in our lives, mostly unintentionally.

We reminisced about hot summer days drinking water out of the water hose, after it had been lying in the grass among the creepy crawlies. We also found that we shared a favorite childhood bath time activity...sucking on the wet washcloth.

Gosh. I haven't done that in weeks.

Idol Apologizes to Contestant for Suggesting He Threatened Judges

American Idol has apologized to contestant Mark Mudd for suggesting he threatened the judges during an audition show last week in Louisville, Ky.

After Mudd was rejected, the 25-year-old wannabe singer told the judges, "Take care and be careful."

Paula Abdul interpreted that line as a threat, explaining that it's "not a normal thing to say to people."

On Thursday, Idol reps issued the following apology:

"We apologize to any viewers who were offended by the misinterpretation of the contestant's comment to 'be careful' upon completion of his audition in Louisville, KY.

"Our visits to audition cities are relatively brief and sometimes regional greetings and salutations are lost in translation. We had not heard that phrase from any other contestants during the day, so it took everyone by surprise.

"We now know better and look forward to visiting Louisville again someday."

Laurie's reaction:
"Idiots."

Curse you, you curse-ed DVR!!!

I went out last night and, as feared, my DVR didn't record American Idol which pisses me off to no end. I guess I'm going to have to pull my VHS out of the closet for backup. UGH!

What pisses me off even more is that American Idol is the only program on television that isn't rerun constantly or available online.

WTF?!

American Idol - Season 8: "Be careful."

I agree that American Idol contestant Mark Mudd is a little scary looking, but Paula and Simon overreacted to his "be careful" remark taking it as a threat. It's a southern thang and I hope Randy set them straight on that. (Of course, if he did it was edited out. That would have lessened the imaginary "drama" of the imaginary situation.) The poor guy was being nice even after being blasted by the judges and he got chewed on for it.

I already have a favorite and his name is Adam Lambert. Here's a YouTube video...
